Bangkok’s winding sois can hold many wonders, so perhaps it shouldn’t have been a surprise when a pair of decades-old commercial jets suddenly appeared off Ramkamhaeng Road.
As our population grows the gap between the wealthy and the poor grows with it. This boy found asylum with his and other families in this previously abandoned airplane graveyard. It was an ironic twist of fate that these planes became homes to those who could never have afforded to fly in them.
Entering the resting Boeing 747-400 fuselage, being very careful about where we put our hands and feet, as there was several sharp, jagged edges inside the old scrapped planes.
It is an eerie feeling walking in a forgotten plane with all the seats stripped out and the tail cut off.
I gazed out of the window from a leftover fuselage to see the two dogs sitting on a piece of discarded airplane wing. The whole time during our visit in this nest of metallic birds, these two dogs have been playing with each other.
Many airlines send in the old fuselages of their planes to be recycled, and salvage any components which may be reused again – be it for a new plane, or something completely different. Not all planes get to be reincarnated though. Some end up all but forgotten in an open field for earth to reclaim.
